What does microneedling do?

Also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), microneedling can transform your skin. It is minimally invasive and is a safer alternative than other resurfacing treatments like lasers.

We use microneedling to address a wide range of skin issues, including acne scars, pockmarks, large pores, melasma, hyperpigmentation, age spots, sun spots, stretch marks, and uneven skin tone. Microneedling:

  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles – from lipstick or smoker’s lines to crow’s feet

  • Improves smoothness and hydration

  • Boosts penetration of skincare products

  • Encourages plumper, firmer skin

  • Increases radiance

  • Improves skin elasticity

  • Results in better microcirculation

  • Stimulates antioxidant activity

Dr Harpal Bains says: “I’ve administered this treatment countless times, but each time I am blown away by what can be achieved. Microneedling can make such a difference to your confidence and looks so natural. At Harpal Clinic, we prefer to use a medical-grade microneedling pen instead of derma rollers because it causes less trauma to the surface; as a result, post-treatment recovery is considerably quicker. The therapist can also adjust the penetration depth depending on the issue or area of skin being treated. For example, pitted scarring needs much deeper penetration whilst the area under the eye has to be treated with minimal penetration. The needle head is single-use, and so it is very hygienic.”

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling works by stimulating your skin to produce more collagen. We use a medical grade microneedling pen – a microneedling device that has 14 super fine oscillating needles. We tailor the depth of the pen according to the treatment area and your desired outcome. The device glides across the skin in circular motions to create micro-injuries in the epidermis. The healing process stimulates the production of collagen, amongst other goodies. We apply an active peptide mask post-treatment to help the regeneration process, and the microchannels created in the skin help increase absorption of the product.

Nano needling

We liken nano needling to a more gentle version of microneedling, used to plump the skin with microscopic conical silicone tips finer than human hairs. They penetrate the epidermis (the uppermost layer of skin), leaving you with an instant glow. The treatment itself is faster than microneedling, and you can expect less downtime post-treatment (just 2-3 days).

  • Good for sensitive skin

  • No need for anaesthetic

  • Good for pigmentation

What’s the difference between microneedling + nano needling?

The main difference between microneedling and nano needling is the depth at which the two treatments penetrate the skin. Nano needling can be more suitable for fine lines and pigmentation depending on your skin concerns and overall goals for your appearance. Microneedling, which penetrates the deeper layers of the skin, may be more suitable for treating heavier wrinkles, acne pitting, vitiligo and deep scars.

The Harpal way

We take personalised skincare to the next level. Whether you have a single area of concern or want to refresh your look entirely, we work with you to create a treatment plan that achieves your goals and works with your budget. If appropriate, we may suggest microneedling is carried out in tandem with other treatments, including Botox, fillers, and/or chemical peels.

One of the many benefits of being a functional medicine clinic is that for issues like acne, which are caused by a hormonal imbalance, we can take a two-pronged approach and address the surface of the skin and effectively treat the underlying cause for you.

Radiofrequency microneedling

In addition to microneedling and nano needling, we also provide radiofrequency microneedling. As the name suggests, this combines microneedling with radiofrequency, a form of energy that eventually converts into heat energy that targets the deeper layers whilst maintaining the integrity of the skin. This is suitable for all skin types and achieves long-term results. In fact, you can continue to see the results improve for up to 6-9 months after treatment.

What happens during a microneedling procedure?
Topical anaesthesia will be applied to the area 15 minutes before treatment. Vitamin A serum will also be applied to the skin during treatment, and the therapist will glide a pen-like device with microneedles over the area multiple times. At the end of treatment, a healing peptide mask will be applied to soothe the skin and reduce any redness. The peptides in the mask will help kickstart the regeneration process.

How long will the procedure last?
60 minutes (this includes consultation and anaesthesia time).

Is microneedling painful?
We use a strong topical anaesthesia to numb the skin, so most clients only feel a vibration. Some clients do feel slight (bareable) pain around the forehead and nose.

What happens straight after treatment?
Your skin will appear bright red and inflamed. We suggest you do not apply make-up. We also recommend you combine your microneedling or nano needling with an Intraceuticals facial to aid healing and give the active ingredients more opportunity to absorb.

When will I see the results?
For microneedling, once the redness has settled (usually after 2-3 days), the skin starts to heal, and the results begin to appear as time goes on, continually improving up to a month or even longer after treatment.

For nano needling, recovery is much quicker, and your skin will see results after a week with gradual, continuous improvements over the next few weeks.

How often should I have microneedling?
We recommend starting with a course of 3 sessions. Depending on your skin condition, we may suggest completing the course over a period of 6-12 weeks and that this cycle is repeated once a year.

Are microneedling results permanent?
Each person’s skin is unique, and although the results of microneedling are long-lasting, this doesn’t stop the natural ageing process, which is why we recommend the treatment is repeated once a year (varies between individuals) to maintain the results.

Is microneedling considered safe?
Microneedling is a safe treatment for most people and is safer than derma rolling at home; in the clinic you can be sure that everything is kept sterile to reduce any risk of infection. It is not suitable for women who are pregnant.
