“Most skin treatments are focused around looking great in the short-term. Whilst there’s definitely a place for facials and day-to-day skincare, non-surgical injectable skin treatments deliver beneficial biostimulators to the layers of the skin that creams and serums cannot reach. They deliver results in the longer-term and that cannot be achieved with other treatments.

With a longevity approach to aesthetics your skin will look better, but because most of the work is going on under the skin, you may not notice huge changes right away. However, in 5 years, when you compare your skin to friends’ who haven’t had anything done, you’ll really notice a big difference.”

Non-surgical injectable skin treatments: What’s the difference between skin boosters + polynucleotides?

Skin boosters and polynucleotides are both administered using a very fine needle – a technique called mesotherapy. They contain skin enhancing nutrients delivered to the mesoderm, or the ‘middle layer’ of the skin, where topical skincare products cannot reach.

Although both treatments are fantastic for long-term skin rejuvenation, they achieve different results. One is not necessarily better than the other, it just depends on what you are looking for.

We often suggest booking your treatment time and we can guide you during the consultation on the day about the best choice in order to achieve your goals.

Polynucleotides

Polynucleotides are DNA fragments derived from salmon or trout and have emerged as a groundbreaking ingredient in aesthetics. We have chosen Italian-made Plinest for its superior formulation and science, plus its well documented efficacy in skin therapy.

This bio-stimulant is ideal for those looking to rejuvenate their skin and under eyes, and address concerns such as dryness, loss of elasticity, or early signs of ageing, such as fine lines, sagging, and scars. The best age to begin this treatment is around 35 onwards, or sooner if there is a lot of skin damage or a specific concern.

The visible benefits of polynucleotides:

  • Improved elasticity
  • Enhanced hydration
  • Wound healing (great for improving the appearance of scarring)
  • Reduced wrinkles and fine lines
  • Improved texture

The hidden benefits of polynucleotides:

  • Improves collagen production
  • Reduced inflammation (may work for eczema in some)
  • Deep tissue repair
  • Cell regeneration

Skin boosters

The main ingredient used in skin boosters is hyaluronic acid (HA), a well-researched, naturally occurring substance that attracts and retains water, helping to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. HA has gained popularity in recent years as an effective ingredient in topical skincare products; however, when injected, its absorption and efficacy are dramatically increased.

At Harpal Clinic, we use Sunekos and Profhilo, two skin boosters with high concentrations of HA. Profhilo contains pure HA, and Sunekos contains a patented formula of HA and amino acids. Your consultant will advise you on the best skin booster for your needs at your consultation.

Skin boosters are designed to improve skin quality by increasing the body’s production of collagen and elastin. They are ideal for individuals with dry and/or ageing skin who want their skin to look more plump and hydrated.

The visible benefits of skin boosters:

  • Restores skin elasticity
  • Plumped skin
  • Wrinkle and fine line reduction
  • Increased hydration
  • Improved texture and tone
  • Visible glow
  • Reduced dark circles

The hidden benefits of skin boosters:

  • Promotes production of elastin and collagen

How do they work?

In a nutshell, polynucleotides are like planting the seeds by creating the foundation for fibroblast production, while skin boosters are like nourishing the soil, stimulating those fibroblasts to grow strong and produce collagen and elastin.

What do polynucleotides do to the skin?

Polynucleotides are DNA fragments derived from salmon or trout. These powerful molecules, when injected into the skin, stimulate production of fibroblasts (the principal active cell of connective tissue), the cells responsible for collagen synthesis, repairing and regenerating. In the short term, polynucleotides improve hydration and enhance skin elasticity. Over the longer term, microcirculation improves, leading to better quality, more resilient skin.

How do Profhilo and Sunekos skin boosters work?

Skin boosters are designed to stimulate fibroblasts to promote collagen and elastin production – two products that enable the skin to appear plump and refreshed. The hyaluronic acid enhances cellular hydration. An overwhelming benefit of this process is the long lasting effect of the treatment – as your skin has been stimulated to produce collagen and elastin, it will continue to do so well after the skin boosters have been administered.

FAQs

So what’s the difference between skin boosters and fillers? Aren’t they the same thing?

There is a lot of confusion about this, after all, both use types of Hyaluronic Acid (HA). They both increase hydration in the skin, enabling a plumper, glowing appearance.

But the type of HA used differs depending on intended use. We use one type of HA with strong crosslinks (which makes it thick and ideal for adding volume) for fillers. Different types of HA (Profhilo and Sunekos) are used for skin boosters – this is much less viscous which is better for the purpose of diffusing into the layers of the skin. It does not create volume like traditional fillers and the HA is also used as a ‘carrier’ for other nutrients to target this area of your skin.

Skin boosters and polynucleotides are suited to people who are looking for a long-term solution to better quality skin and understand that care today means better skin tomorrow. They may be suitable for anyone looking to achieve a natural, youthful glow to their skin. Frequently, those who opt for skin boosters want to reduce the appearance of dark circles, dull and dehydrated skin, wrinkles and fine lines. Those who opt for polynucleotides are usually looking to rejuvenate their skin and under eyes, and address concerns such as dryness, loss of elasticity, or early signs of ageing, such as fine lines, sagging, and scars.

Non-surgical injectable skin treatments are applied using a very fine needle, therefore some discomfort may be experienced. However, we do apply a strong anaesthetic cream before treatment.

We allow an hour for your appointment. This includes 15-20 minutes for the anaesthetic cream to work, and up to 45 minutes for the treatment itself. However, this does depend on the size of the treatment area.

You will have a consultation to discuss your skincare goals and the treatment itself. Then, if you are a suitable candidate, we will apply an anaesthetic cream. Once the areas have become numb, the skin boosters or polynucleotides will be applied via a series of very small injections. This may feel uncomfortable but is generally well tolerated. The average appointment lasts between 30 to 45 mins, depending on the size of the treatment area. We will then recommend a post-recovery product for you to use at home.

Downtime is minimal, however, when undergoing any treatment involving needles and the sensitive skin around the face and under eyes, there may be some swelling and bruising present after treatment. This will fade after a few days. For this reason, we suggest treatment is towards the end of your working day. Some patients choose to take time off work to allow their skin to recover in the privacy of their own home. However, this is personal preference.

We will suggest a post-recovery cream following the procedure. We also recommend avoiding exercise, saunas and steam rooms, consuming alcohol, plane travel and strong skincare ingredients such as AHAs and retinol in the first 48 hours after treatment. SPF is advised for all needle based treatments.

You can begin to see results as early as the end of the first week following treatment.

Profhilo and Sunekos: The results of skin boosters are cumulative. You may notice your skin feels smoother shortly after treatment but it can take 2-3 weeks for full effects. The results will continue to improve in time.

Polynucleotides: Around a week after treatment you may notice improved radiance. Around three months after treatment you’ll start to notice that your skin looks really good and at six months it’s still maintained. This is because the polynucleotides continue to cause collagen stimulation.

The results of skin boosters usually last around nine to 12 months, though this may vary from person to person. The effect of skin boosters is an increase in your own body’s production of collagen and elastin – a result that you get to keep! Although we assess individually, we usually suggest three treatments within 3-4 months and then a break for a year before repeating.

The results of polynucleotides last for between 9 and 12 months. The frequency of treatment varies based on the brand and what you are trying to achieve. We assess this individually but on the whole, we usually recommend three treatments within 3-4 months and then a break for a year before repeating.

You can still get this treatment if you have a seafood allergy as all allergens are removed during the purification process.
